The Greene County Early Learning Center board of directors and staff invite the public to help celebrate the center’s 10th anniversary at an open house Tuesday, Oct. 13, from 6 to 8 pm. The Greene County Early Learning Center is located within the Greene County Schools administration building at 204 W. Madison St in Jefferson.
All ages are welcome at the open house. There will be tours, autumn-themed children’s activities, take-home resources for parents, and refreshments. Stacie Stevenson of Iowa Public Television will be there with stand-up cut-outs of Wyatt from “Super Why” and Peg from “Peg Plus Cat.”
The Greene County Early Learning Center opened in August, 2005, licensed for 20 children. Three children attended on the first day and there were five staff members in the center’s one classroom.
Today, the GCELC has five classrooms and a licensed capacity of 116 children. There are 108 children on the roster and 30 employees. The center serves children from 6 weeks through school age and offers a robust summer program for the older children.
In the past 10 years, 474 children from 317 families have attended the Greene County Early Learning Center. The board and staff have actively sought grants to help make the center affordable for families, and more than $92,000 in grants has been received. In the past five years, GCELC employees have undertaken more than 850 hours of professional development.
